Insights and Experiences from the Fall 2010 Graduate Open House

Last Saturday morning, most Bostonians were probably sleeping in on their day off. But I was up bright and early, Starbucks in hand, on my way to the Emerson Graduate Open House at the Ritz-Carlton. Although unaccustomed to such posh environs, I felt right at home when my fellow Emersonians began to file in and take their positions at their programs’ information tables. As prospective students entered and began inquiring about their program of choice, I braced myself hoping I would be able to answer all of the questions I would receive from potential Communication Management students.

Though Communication Management enrolls the fewest amount of applicants each year, the program typically receives the most questions. This made it all the more exciting for me to explain the inner workings of my program to prospective students who began to congregate in greater numbers around my table as they learned more about one of Emerson’s most unique degrees. At the end of the day, it was gratifying to feel that I had convinced at least one or two people to apply to the program and provide them with information they may not have received otherwise.
After lunch, I joined the rest of the admission staff in leading campus tours for the excited prospective applicants. Although shepherding thirty people into the Walker Building elevators and through the Iwasaki Library proved to be no easy task, I was pleased with the group’s positive energy and insightful questions. As I rode the T back home, I began thinking about what great opportunities events like this are. The graduate school and program a person attends can have a tremendous impact on the course of their life, and as an admissions representative I can play a role in helping them make that important decision.
