DOE, City Council vote for schools PCB removal

The city is speeding up the removal of PCBs from New York City Schools.

A study last year found PCBs were leaking from old light fixtures in some schools.

The City Council and the Department of Education agreed Tuesday night to reallocate funds so an additional $30 million can be used for removing toxic lights.

PCBs are chemical compounds that were widely used in construction and electrical products.

Long-term exposure to the chemicals can cause cancer.
