GILBERT – A new school is opening in the east valley, and it’s helping high school students get a jump start on their future and earn college credits at the same time.
The East Valley Institute of Technology is opening their second school on the ASU Polytechnic Campus near Power and Warner.
“We find that once students come out to the campus, they’re really amazed by type of facility, state of the art, unlike anything else in the valley or in the state,” says EVIT’s Tiffani Nichols.
Students can spend a half day at their traditional high school and the rest of the day here, studying a specific job. And it’s proven to be successful
“Close to 80 percent of our students they go into a college the industry or go into the military and we’re very proud of that,” says James Fisher, EVIT Campus Director.
At the new facility you can take health classes to further a nursing assistant degree, or enter an intense aviation program headed up by a retired Southwest Airlines captain.
“If you have any aspiration for a career in aviation this is the place to be,” says Capt. Al Mittelstaedt, Director of Aviation.
Students can become a private pilot, work their way to becoming a commercial pilot, air traffic controller, or learn to fly an unmanned aircraft.
“It’s a great program with drones because half the military airplanes are flown by remote control and starting salary is about $180,000.”
The school opens in August and is free for high school students in several districts throughout the valley. About 300 students will be enrolled.
