TUCSON, Ariz. – Two donations will let the University of Arizona become the official owner of the Biosphere 2 research facility on July 1.
One donation includes 40 acres of real estate, while the other consists of $20 million to support operations.
The university says ownership of the facility in Oracle, Ariz., will put it into a position to seek investments from state and federal government and collaborate with other schools on projects.
The university took over management of the facility in 2007 after Columbia University used the site from 1995 to 2003.
More than 2.5 million people have visited the facility since it was constructed.
