Halls hold memories for Manitou alums

The halls in Manitou Springs Elementary School were humming on Saturday, but not with children.

Instead, five decades worth of former students gathered to catch up, trade memories, and wander through history in the school’s Heritage Hall.

The school, built in 1923, holds a special place for Manitou Springs residents who remember it as the community’s hub, a place of school plays, bake sales and sports. Until the “new” high school was built in the 1950s, every student in the small town had their classes in the building.

“Now I come and people want to talk to me because I’m old,” said Joanne Meury, a 1949 graduate of the school where several generations of her family have learned to read and write.

In Meury’s school days, she wanted to be in everything, which included bands and the student newspaper. Graduating with just 29 classmates meant every kid could join in every activity.

“There weren’t many of us to do everything,” she said.

Early in its history, the school was simply Manitou Springs School, serving all grades. The last high school

Business Sector Wary of Available Local Employment

In new research released today, it was revealed that 44% of new recruits are falling short of employer expectations.

The opinions of more than 2,000 employers and employees were gathered by recruitment specialist Hudson for its annual 20:20 research series which aims to shed light on current recruitment trends, and shortcomings.

The data gathered during the research identified deficiencies in current recruitment practices, which appear to be out-dated and misfiring at unsuitable talent, according to survey respondents.

Despite human resource shortages, the research showed that recruiters remain focused on ‘traditional’ recruitment practices when making hiring decisions, resulting in substantial financial and productivity losses.

David Willetts lobbied universities on behalf of rejected students

Universities minister David Willetts said his interventions were as a constituency MP on behalf of international baccalaureate candidates. Andy Rain/EPA

In two cases the candidates were constituents of the minister, who is MP for Havant in Hampshire. In a third, the candidate did not live in the constituency but attended a local sixth-form college.

The minister’s personal intervention comes amid an unprecedented squeeze on university places, due to a record demand and a cap on government-funded degree courses at English universities.

In one case Willetts wrote to the vice-chancellor of Exeter University about a candidate who achieved 26 points in the international baccalaureate diploma, the equivalent of A-level grades BCC. In a highly competitive year, the university’s typical offer spans AAA-ABB at A-level, 36-32 points in the IB.

The letter was passed to the admissions office, which did not offer the candidate a place.
